PDP, CUPP knock Buhari over Mali trip

The Peoples Democratic Party and the Coalition of United Political Parties have berated the President, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (retd.), for allegedly ignoring Nigeria’s socio-economic problems and choosing instead to visit Mali “for photo -ops”.

In separate statements in Abuja, on Sunday, the PDP and the CUPP noted that Nigeria’s security problems were more deserving of the President’s attention even as they acknowledged the importance of seeking a solution to the political tension in Mali.

In a statement titled, “Mali Trip: Visit Katsina, Kaduna, Borno others Now, PDP Tells Buhari…Urges Mr President To Address Issues At Home” signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, on Sunday, the PDP said President Buhari’s visit to troubled Mali at a time he has failed to find solutions to Nigeria’s problems, called to question his determination to face our challenges “under his incompetent watch”.

The PDP said since President Buhari has shown that he can leave the comfort and safety of the Presidential Villa, he should respond to the distress calls by Nigerians and immediately visit Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Taraba, Benue, Borno, Adamawa, Sokoto, Yobe and other states being daily pillaged by bandits, insurgents, kidnappers and marauders.

The PDP described Buhari’s visit to Mali at this time as a misplacement of governance urgency as well as an inexcusable dereliction of statutory responsibilities vested on the person and office of the President and Commander -in-Chief of the country.

The statement further read, “While the PDP has nothing against Nigeria’s participation in seeking peace in the troubled Mali, it is however depressing that, upon re-opening his doors, President Buhari had Mali as his priority destination.”
